The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has raised concerns over the electricity crisis, alleged cases of police harassment, and rising accommodation costs across the region.
The student body said the challenges are significantly affecting students in the Southwest.
Speaking at a press conference, the Zonal Coordinator of NANS Southwest, Comrade Adeyemo Kayode, alongside chairmen of the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) from the six Southwest states, called on government and relevant stakeholders to urgently address the issues confronting Nigerian students.
Adeyemo explained that the meeting followed extensive consultations among student leaders across the zone, during which several pressing concerns were raised, including deteriorating power supply, alleged cases of police brutality against students, increasing accommodation costs in student communities, and the need to strengthen the operational capacity of state-level student leadership.
The NANS Southwest leadership expressed dissatisfaction with the current electricity situation in the country, describing it as detrimental to academic activities and student welfare.
Adeyemo noted that persistent power outages affecting campuses and surrounding communities have created serious challenges for students who depend on electricity for studying, research, and safety.
Adeyemo frowned at increasing cost of accommodation in student communities across the Southwest.
According to him, landlords and agents continue to exploit students by imposing excessive rents, forcing many students into overcrowded and unsafe housing conditions.
NANS Southwest called on state Houses of Assembly across the region to introduce student-friendly tenancy regulations and rent control measures to protect students from exploitation.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts toward maintaining national peace and stability during challenging global conditions.
The student leadership also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Ayodele Olawande, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Hon. Asefon Sunday, for their support toward student leadership.
He particularly acknowledged the provision of six operational vehicles to the six NANS Zonal Coordinators, describing the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening coordination and mobility within the student movement. (The Nation)
