Mr Peter Obi
The diaspora arm of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has raised concerns over what it describes as a growing pattern of intimidation and security threats against former presidential candidate Peter Obi, warning that such developments could undermine Nigeria’s democratic stability.
In a statement signed by Dr. Ben Chukwu, Director of COPDEM in Diaspora and Convener of Professionals for Good Governance and Social Justice (PGGSJ), the group alleged that recent incidents and political rhetoric directed at Obi have escalated beyond the bounds of normal democratic rivalry.
The coalition claimed that Obi has faced restrictions and security warnings in certain states, which it said were attempts to limit his political engagements. It also referenced what it described as a serious security incident in Edo State involving Obi’s convoy, alleging that armed individuals attacked his movement. However, the group did not provide independent evidence and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
COPDEM further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fostering a climate of hostility toward opposition figures. As of the time of this report, the party had not publicly responded to the specific allegations.
The group called on Nigeria’s security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), to investigate individuals it claims may have prior knowledge of the alleged threats. It urged authorities to ensure equal security protection for all political actors, regardless of party affiliation.
In addition, COPDEM appealed to the international community to closely monitor political developments in Nigeria, warning that rising political tensions could have broader implications for democratic governance. (Vanguard, excluding headline)
