The Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) has expressed its concern regarding recent reports about the alleged formation of a group called the “Northern Christian Association” (NCA).
In a statement issued by its chairman, Elder Sunday Oibe, to news reporters in Kaduna over the weekend, he noted that those behind the reported formation of the NCA claim that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has not addressed the challenges facing Christians in the North forcefully enough. As a result, they decided to create a separate organisation.
“While recognising that individuals have a constitutional right to freedom of association, NOSCEF categorically states that it is not true that Christians in Northern Nigeria have withdrawn from CAN, the statement averred.
“We wish to make it clear that such claims are entirely false, mischievous, and a calculated attempt to divide Christians.
NOSCEF affirms unequivocally that CAN remains the only legally and nationally recognised umbrella body for Christians in Nigeria.
“Any narrative suggesting a mass withdrawal or the establishment of parallel structures misrepresents the true position of Northern Christian leaders and threatens the unity Christians have sustained over decades.
“As a forum representing Christian elders in Northern Nigeria, NOSCEF does not support or identify with any divisive group.
“We recall the sacrifices made by former CAN President, Pastor Oritsejafor, in defence of Northern Christians, and consider it unjust and inappropriate to disregard such contributions through sweeping and unfounded allegations.
NOSCEF also rejects claims by those promoting the purported NCA that the national leadership of CAN has remained silent on the persecution and security challenges facing Christians in parts of Northern Nigeria.
On the contrary, CAN has consistently condemned attacks against Christians in the region, visited affected communities, engaged relevant government authorities, and advocated for justice and comprehensive security reforms.
“We maintain that institutional fragmentation will only weaken the collective Christian voice at a time when unity and coordinated engagement are most needed
The statement averred that regarding the controversy surrounding the decision of the Lagos State chapter of CAN to honour Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, NOSCEF notes that the event was a decision taken by the Lagos State chapter and not by the national leadership of CAN.
At this critical juncture, solidarity remains essential. CAN continues to serve as the collective platform for Christians in Nigeria and must be strengthened in the interest of the Christian faith and the nation as a whole. (Saturday Tribune)
