Nigeria’s Daniel Adeleye on Saturday defeated Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Usmonjono 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a singles match at the ITF Davis Cup tie in Lagos.

Adeleye narrowly dominated proceedings to secure a 2-1 victory on home soil, strengthening Nigeria’s position in the ongoing tie.

Uzbekistan, however, remained in contention as Khumoyun Sultanov defeated Nigeria’s Canice Abua 6-3, 6-4 in the second singles encounter.

The two-day tie, organised by the ITF with the Nigeria Tennis Federation, featured intense singles and doubles matches, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The matches attracted a large turnout of spectators, sports administrators and supporters, who cheered the Nigerian team throughout the encounters.

In spite of his defeat, Abua expressed optimism, saying the experience would help improve his game.

“Honestly, I don’t feel bad because the guy I played is a top player and just returning from a tournament victory,” Abua said.

He described the match as a valuable learning experience and promised better performances.

“It’s a good experience and I just have to put in more work. They should expect better tennis tomorrow,” he added.

Abua said playing at home brought pressure but also motivation due to crowd support.

“It’s a huge task playing at home, so you have to put in your best,” he said.

Adeleye described his victory as a major boost for him and Nigerian tennis development.

“This win improves my Davis Cup standing and boosts my confidence ahead of future international assignments,” Adeleye said.

He added that he was determined to justify his champion status.

“If you don’t prove yourself, you are not a champion. I will prove myself, and I love the support here,” he said.

Sultanov described his victory as rewarding, despite challenging conditions.

“It was a tough match and the conditions were challenging, but we stayed focused,” Sultanov said.

The Uzbek player, a recent title winner in Kuwait, said the victory boosted his confidence.

“The win has given us momentum, and we’re looking forward to the next match,” he added.

Sultanov said adapting to Lagos weather was demanding. “The heat and humidity are tough, but we’re managing and staying positive,” he said.

The Davis Cup tie continues on Sunday, with Nigerian players seeking improved results in the remaining matches. (NAN)
