The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to reject the establishment of State Police.
The party expressed concern about the timing of this proposal, particularly as the government has nearly lost its credibility and effectiveness in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the PRP, the Tinubu administration lacks the moral authority and the trust of the Nigerian people to implement such a significant change in the country’s policing structure.
The party emphasised that what Nigeria truly needs is a comprehensive review and overhaul of its security and law enforcement institutions.
This reform is essential to address national security issues and to foster an environment that enhances citizens’ confidence in their leaders and critical institutions.
PRP national chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, in a statement signed and made available to Tribune Online, said, “This administration will almost certainly secure what is needed to amend the constitution and actualise its desire to establish State Police. This administration lacks the moral assets and the trust of Nigerians to undertake a major shift in the policing structure of the country.
“The APC administration has failed to manage our security structure and institutions. Its plan to engineer the emergence of State Police is suspicious and it should be rejected.”
While urging that the forthcoming election should be a threshold which should be crossed with credibility and popular acclaim before the nation decides on important issues such as state police structures, the PRP advised the current administration to make more efforts towards securing citizens and bringing an end to the nightmare the citizens are currently passing through.
