The Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abia State Councilwill today (Friday, September 30, 2016) honour three distinguished Abians, among them Senator Theodore Orji, immediate past governor of the state, as part of events marking the grand finale of her Press Week.
Senator Orjiwill be honoured alongside another lawmaker and amember of the House of Representatives, Hon. Uko Nkole and a business mogul cum philanthropist, Prince Odinaka Igwe. They are being honoured for making positive impacts on the development of God’s own state in their various areas of endeavour.
A statement endorsed by the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. Sam Obinna Ibe, disclosed that the award ceremony will hold at the Aguiyi Ironsi Conference Cenrre Umuahia, with the state Commissioner for Works, Chief Eziuche Ubani as Chairman of the occasion.
“The awards would beam a spotlight on the need for the culture of equity, justice and fair play to be entrenched in the politics of Abia and Nigeria, in general, as well as encourage citizens participation in the development of their areas.
“It is on record that Senator Orji kept his word and implemented the Abia Charter of Equity despite stringent opposition and ensured the enthronement of equity in the politics of the state with the emergence of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, an Ukwa/Ngwa man as governor,” the statement read in part.
He added that the successful power shift to Abia South has immensely engendered peace and harmony in Abia polity, which had previously been characterised by acrimony, distrust and ill will due to the perceived marginalisation of a section of the state.
The theme of the Week is “The Imperatives of Equity and Fairness as Initiated and Implemented by the Administration of T. A. Orji, “which will form the nucleus of the keynote address to be delivered by the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Azubuike.
A renown journalist and a former Vice President,Zone C of NUJ, Sir Ambrose Nwachukwu, is also billed to deliver a lecture on “Journalism Profession and Its Ethics” to keep media practitioner abreast of the demands of their challenging profession in a rapidly changing society.
