The National Examination Council (NECO) has released the 2016 June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

NECO says 88.51% of the candidates obtained five credit pass and above including English Language and General Mathematics.

The Registrar and CEO of NECO, Professor Charles Uwakwe, announced the release of the results on Friday in Minna, Niger State’s capital in north-central Nigeria.

He noted that there was a 20% increase in the general performance of candidates in 2016, as compared with 2015.

The Registrar disclosed that 905,011 of the 1,022,474 students that sat for the examination in Nigeria and other countries got five credits and above while 84.54% got credit pass and above in English Language and 80.16% obtained credit pass and above in General Mathematics.

He, however, said that 194 schools were involved in mass cheating while 14 schools had been derecognised by NECO for examination malpractice, even as 76 subjects were examined.

Professor Uwakwe decried the rates at which schools were involved in malpractices and cheating and warned that any school caught would be derecognised.

He attributed the increased performance of students in the examination to the contributions from NECO staff and his predecessors, who he said had laid a good foundation and the seriousness of the students.

The NECO boss stated further that the examination body would not reduce its standard in any way, especially as it intended to make its mark in the global assessment industry.

“I want to solicit for support from all our stakeholders.

“NECO should be seen as a Nigerian baby that requires the care and support of all, to enable her attain that first class international status.

“We are working hard to ensure NECO makes her mark in the global assessment industry.”
