Workers hold Labor Day rallies across US against 'billionaire takeover'

'Workers Over Billionaires' protests held in several locations including Boston, Chicago, Maryland and New York

Labor Day demonstrations took place Monday in several US cities under the banner of the "Workers Over Billionaires" campaign, with protesters demanding better working conditions and denouncing the Trump administration's policies, according to local reports.

The mass rallies were held by the May Day Strong Movement in major cities including Boston, Chicago and New York alongside smaller towns and communities.

Saqib Bhatti, executive director of the Action Center on Race and the Economy, told USA Today that the demonstrations aimed to show "opposition to the Trump-billionaire agenda in every community, big and small."

In New York, several hundred people gathered outside Trump Tower, chanting "New York is a working town" as brass bands led marches, according to USA Today.

Another protest took place in Tallahassee, Florida, where speakers demanded just wages and benefits.

In Baltimore and other parts of Maryland, CBS News reported that protesters gathered at McKeldin Plaza and in Westminster, describing the actions as a "mass mobilization protesting the billionaire takeover in the United States."

In Chicago, local news reported that Mayor Brandon Johnson joined protestors, chanting "no federal troops in the city of Chicago" amid reports of expanded immigration enforcement operations planned by the Trump administration.

Johnson also signed an executive order barring city police from cooperating with federal military patrols or civil immigration enforcement.

According to the May Day Strong Movement, Monday's protests follow the June "No Kings" rallies, which organizers said drew millions nationwide in opposition to US President Donald Trump's policies.(AA)
