Anambra’s students protest government refusal to pay bursary

Students of tertiary institution under the aegis of National Union of Anambra State Students (NUASS) have expressed displeasure over the non-payment of bursary by the state government.

This was made known in a communiqué issued by the association in Awka after an enlarged stakeholders meeting recently, even as the students frowned over the lack of recognition from the government by way of scholarships and appointment into government offices.

The communiqué, which was signed by the immediate past president of the association, Comrade Israel Anozie, the president of the association, Comrade Toochukwu Atuanya, and four zonal presidents from Enugu, Imo, South West, South-South and Northern zones, said a protest would be carried out to press home the association demands.

The group said states like Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Imo pay bursary to their colleagues in tertiary institutions, but the reverse has been the case in Anambra.

“In Anambra State, we lack a lot of things, we are not paid bursary, we do not get scholarships from state government, we do not have a functional secretariat and we are also in need of a bus, but all these things are nowhere in sight.

“Would it be wrong to also appoint one of our members to his government to be our eye? These are some of the things we are asking from the government,” the communiqué said. (The Authority)
