The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Danbatta, says plans are underway to create access to affordable, fixed and mobile broadband in Nigeria.
Professor Danbatta said this during a meeting between top management of the NCC and the media in the northwest, north-central and the FCT regions.
The meeting served as an opportunity for the regulatory body to give an update of its activities, challenges and objections for the years ahead.
Professor Danbatta, who unveiled his 8-point agenda to last till 2020, said that the promotion of ICT innovation, investment opportunities, fair competition and inclusive growth must go hand in hand with the consumer protection and empowerment.
He said that the regulatory body has commenced extensive monitoring of key consumer issues such as frequent drop calls, excessive data charges and unsolicited messages and will soon make pronouncements on the problems.
Speaking on issues of SIM registration, which affects many subscribers across the networks, the regulatory body urged all affected customers to patiently comply with the service providers.
He stated that the telecom companies are working under the directives of the Commission to eliminate fraudsters from using their services indiscriminately. (Channels TV)
