No plans to scrap Delta institutions of higher learning: Okowa

Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, has allayed fears of his administration scrapping existing institutions of higher learning, assuring that it is instead working for the accreditation of all courses in such institutions.

he gave the assurance yesterday at a thanksgiving service organised in honour of the member representing Isoko South constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Orezi Esievo, at the Cathedral of St. Paul (Anglican Communion), Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.

Okowa described as wicked, the rumour making the rounds that he wanted to scrap the Oleh Campus of the Delta State University which plays host to the Faculty of Law and that of Engineering.

According to him, “When we came on board, we commenced work at some structures in the Faculty of Engineering, Oleh Campus, for it to get full accreditation, but I read the wicked rumour in the newspaper that we want to scrap the Oleh Campus of DELSU. I want to let you know that there is no sign to scrap the Oleh Campus; it is mischief to make such a call for the scrapping of the Campus; it is a wicked rumour that has no foundation.

"It is our desire that the Engineering Faculty and Law Faculty to be accredited. We agreed during the Education Summit that this is not the time to build more institutions; it is a time to develop the ones we have and get all their courses accredited.”

The governor reiterated that he will tell Deltans the truth at all times and run a transparent, accountable government.

While congratulating Hon. Esievo on her election, Okowa challenged all Deltans to be advocates of a peaceful and crime-free society, noting that with such, the state would be an investors’ haven where prosperity for all Deltans would be achieved.

“The days of oil is fast going, oil is a wasting resource and the world is going beyond it, create a peaceful environment that will allow people to invest in our state,” he said while calling on Christians to be more prayerful for God to change the fortunes of the state and the nation positively.

Earlier in his sermon, the Bishop in charge of the Oleh Diocese of Anglican Communion, Rt. Revd. John Aruakpor, thanked Governor Okowa’s administration for the projects it is executing in Isoko land. He noted that apart from massive infrastructure projects, the Governor Okowa’s administration has also given political appointments to Isoko people.

The cleric assured Governor Okowa of the support of all Deltans, especially Isoko people, for his administration to succeed.
