DSS raids Abia ALGON Chairman’s home in search of arms

The personal house of the Abia State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Chief Ginger Onwusoibe, was early yesterday raided by security agents claiming to be in search of arms.

The raid, said to have taken place at 4am, is the second of its kind this week and came exactly a day after a combined team of the army and men of the Department of State Security (DSS) were invaded the residence of Abia State Commissioner for Works, Chief Eziuche Ubani, also in search of arms.

Narrating what happened to newsmen, Onwusoibe said he was away in Abuja when the men came in four Toyota Hilux vans but only met his brother, who is a pastor.

According to him, his brother “simply opened the gate for them and allowed them to search the house and at the end of the search which lasted about 30 minutes, nothing incriminating was found, they left.”

Onwusoibe, who is the Transition Committee Chairman of Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, pointed out that though the men ransacked the whole house, nothing was damaged.

He said that he gathered that the “visitors” introduced themselves as DSS personnel. “The DPO of the area also confirmed that some officials made entry for an arrest they said they came to carry out at Ntigha,” Onwusoibe said. He added that the Commander of the Military Post in the area, however, denied knowledge of the operation.

The council boss disclosed that he has gone to the Umuahia state office of DSS to confirm that the men came from there and find out the reason for the operation but the State Director was said not to be seat.

“Since I was not at home I am not aware of the reason for the invasion or whether there was any petition like in the case of Eziuche Ubani, but I must get to the root of the matter by tomorrow,” he said.

Dismissing the idea the operation may be in connection with the recent protest he led against the Court of Appeal judgment, Onwusoibe explained that he came out on the day of the protest to ensure that it was peaceful.
