The Imo State Government has advised all road users in the state to respect rules and regulation stipulated under the law to avoid preventable accident as a result of recklessness.
Secretary to the Government of Imo State (SGI), Sir Jude Ejiogu, gave the advice yesterday while flagging off the 2015 Federal Road Safety Corps for Ember Months with the theme, ‘Operation Sanity: Driving Safely Into Year 2016’ at Chukwuma Nwoha Junction, Egbu Road, Owerri.
In a keynote address delivered while flagging off the programme, Sir Ejiogu maintained that over the years, the FRSC has done credibly well to keep road traffic crashes and attendant casualties in check. He said that the commission has deployed every available resources through viable programmes and strategies towards creating a serene motoring environment.
Sir Ejiogu further said that the vision cannot be achieved by mere wish but through robust efforts geared towards respecting laid down road rules and regulations.
The SGI stressed that the Imo State Government frowns at the attitude and recklessness of drivers on the roads, regretting that majority of the defaulters do not possess valid driver’s licence, and called on them to have a change of attitude.
He commended FRSC for responding promptly to distress situations but urged it to also be proactive to forestall ugly incidents. He suggested that patrol of the highways to check over-speeding and reckless driving as well as regular check on vehicles should be enhanced to save more lives.
Delivering his Ember Months address, Sector Commandant of FRSC in Imo State, Dr. Godwin Omiko, stated that the flag-off was meant to sensitise all road users on the need to be cautious in driving. He warned drivers to shun any act of recklessness, over-speeding or drink and driving.
Omiko advised them to respect road signs and avoid going beyond the limit of their vehicles, stressing that there was no need for anyone to lose his or her life as a result of reckless driving when it would have been saved if caution was applied.
