The Magistrate Court Sitting in Ebute Meta area of Lagos State has ordered the remand of 17 persons arrested by the police in connection with the murder of the Managing Director of the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Mr Tajudeen Disu.
Chief Magistrate, Folasade Botoku, made the order on Tuesday, after listening to arguments on an application brought by the police seeking the remand of the men.
Mrs Botoku noted that there was no charge against the suspects before the court and agreed with the defence lawyers that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case against the men.
The application made by the defence counsel for the bail of the suspects however failed as the magistrate held that a court which had no jurisdiction to hear a case could not grant bail.
The magistrate also agreed with the police that Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2011 cloaks her court with powers to entertain a remand order.
The suspects were then ordered to be remanded at the State CID, Panti, in the custody of the police for a period of 30 days in the first instance pending the conclusion of investigations & arraignment.
The court adjourned further proceedings till November 16.
Mr Disu and some others were reportedly shot in the Ibeju Lekki area while on an inspection tour of some projects in the area on Monday.
Another version of the account said that residents of the Okunraiye community in Ibeju Lekki were protesting the takeover of their lands by the Lagos State Government and Mr Disu tried to mediate between them and the police when he was gunned down by unknown persons. (Channels TV)
