Senator Ohuabunwa sponsors motion on sorry state of Nigerian medical institutions

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, representing Abia North, has sponsored a motion on the sorry state of Nigerian medical institutions, decribing the stuation as terrible.

The motion, tabled during plenary yesterday, was seconded by Professor Olusola Adeyeye, of Osun Central Constituency. Prof. Adeyeye lamented the state of education in Nigeria generally, noting that tertiary institutions in the country are no longer universally recognised.

Prof. Adeyeye said that the counry’s medical schools are in shambles, using University College Hospital Ibadan as an example.

He noted that most of the medical students who are finishing from medical schools now cannot be enrolled for their housemanship programme.

“We must pay proper attention to the limitation of our resources, and face the political problem of our country. This is why our doctors are leaving our country for foreign countries,” Senator Adeyeye said.

He urged the Senate to reflect on how the salary scale of Nigerian doctors could be reviewed so as to make the doctors live a good life.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, commended the sponsor of the motion, saying that it would help to redress the ills bedeviling the nation’s health sector. He stressed the need for urgent solution to be be proffered for the problem.
