The League of Civil Society Groups (LOSG) has called on the Federal Government address the complaints of high-handedness by students against the management of the National Open University (NOUN).
The Coordinator of LOSG, Mr. Opeyemi Hakeem, made the call in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.
Hakeem said that the complaints were made by students of the institution in a petitions sent to LOSG seeking its intervention.
According to him, the students complained that they were being charged exorbitant fees for staff to render services for which they were very well paid.
“Many students petitioned us that the management had been blind to their plights and deaf to their pleas for respite.
“How can they cope in the face of such insurmountable roadblocks placed on their path to attaining education?
“The alleged ill-treatment meted out to the students by the management had, therefore, turned their hope for affordable qualitative education into a nightmare.”
Hakeem said that going by these allegations, the simple right to affordable education was becoming a privilege.
“NOUN students have been subjected to the most hostile treatment in their quest to acquire affordable tertiary education, which is ordinarily a right and not a privilege.
“As a societal watchdog, we will not rest on our oars in demanding for good governance and responsible management of public institutions.
“We will occupy the Ministry of Education as well as the NOUN headquarters by way of protest against this mass disservice to the people of Nigeria.” (NAN)
