Probe panel shifts hearing on Rivers monorail project

The Rivers Judicial Commission of Inquiry on the administration of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi has postponed hearing in the state monorail project.

The Chairman, Justice George Omereji, made this known yesterday in a statement made available to journalists in Port Harcourt after counsel to the panel, Mr. Zacchaeus Adangor, announced the failure of persons summoned to testify on the disbursement of four billion naira agricultural loan to appear.

He said that the commission would begin hearing in the project when it resumed on Thursday.

“In view of the fact that there is no witness to give evidence on the agriculture scheme, the commission has decided to adjourn the proceedings till Aug 27 for the hearing on the monorail project.”

The adjournment came with a threat to issue a warrant of arrest to any official of the former administration who refuses to honour its invitation.

This follows an earlier invitation of the former Commissioner of Agriculture of the former administration, Emmanuel Chindah that was not honoured.

The commission had summoned the Commissioner and 12 former local government chairmen representing co-operative societies to appear and explain issues on the disbursement of the agriculture fund.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disagreed on whether the panel has the moral justification to probe Amaechi.

The Chairman of the Commission said that the mission of investigating the alleged sale of state assets and other matters of disbursement of funds under the administration of Amaechi will respect the rule of law.

The APC in the state, however, claimed that the constitution of the panel is questionable and its findings cannot be reliable.
