The Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Simon Schercliff, on Wednesday re-iterated the British government’s commitment to increased economic and political cooperation with Nigeria.
Mr. Schercliff who gave the assurance at the departure ceremony for the 2015 Chevening Scholars said 45 Nigerian scholars have been given full sponsorship, an appreciable increase from 13 given in 2014.
He challenged the scholars to ensure they return after the one year intensive leadership training saying Nigeria needs a collection of globally-acclaimed leaders to bring the enhancement and development the country needs now.
The Deputy High Commissioner, said the UK government, through the Chevening International Award Scheme, which professionally grooms future leaders and decision makers, has increased its commitment to Nigeria.
He said it is a gamble the British government is making to help Nigeria develop but said the scholars must return home to put their acquired expertise to use.
A beneficiary of the award scheme, Grp Capt. Simon Peters, also backed the words of Mr. Scherliff, maintaining that any Nigerian chosen for The Chevening Scholarship has the potential to change the country. (Channels TV)
