Following the recent murder and dismembering the body parts of one Daniel Bassey Solomon from Uruan Local Government Area of the state by one Stephen Anuna, an indigene of Njikoka in Anambra State, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has petitioned the nation’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase and the state police commissioner to “expedite action and accelerate justice on the wicked and inhuman murder.
The Speaker of the House, Hon. Aniekan Uko, who expressed his deep feeling on the floor of the House over the slaughtering of Daniel Solomon, stated that the petition came “on the heels of some ugly antecedents where wealthy and well connected first line charged criminals have been let off the hook despite the gravity of their crimes.”
He directed that copies of the petition be also sent to the state chief judge, the attorney general and relevant committees of the House, which according to him “is intended to accelerate justice for the crime openly confessed and admitted by its perpetrator.”
The House, which was reacting to the petition presented by the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon. Aniekan Bassey, on the brutal murder of Daniel Bassey Solomon from his constituency, described the act as “crime against humanity, and must not be treated with levity”, adding that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
Hon. Bassey disclosed that Solomon was the sole bread winner of his family and urged the House to “wade seriously and decisively into the matter.”
The member, representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in the House, Barr. Onofiok Luke, called on the state government to get involved in the matter “to ensure that justice is done”, adding, “We are not interfering with the duty of the police, however, we have had situations where such issues were treated with kid’s gloves and such offenders walk the streets free, having let off the hooks through so-called powerful connections and relatives.”
Also contributing, Engr. Otobong Ndem, representing Mkpat Enin in the House, reiterated the “irrevocable commitment of the house” to the protection of every Akwa Ibom indigene and other residents in the state, regretting that “such perpetration of insecurity by a non indigene residing and doing his business in the state, could discourage the much expected investors from coming into the state, thereby truncating the industrialisation programme of the present administration.”
