Dogara condemns godfatherism in Nigerian politics

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has noted that there must be a sound mentoring programme for raising leaders as against Godfatherism practice in Nigerian politics.

He said this over the weekend in an information displayed on his twitter handle. In his words, “After killing corruption, the next cankerworm to kill is godfatherism. In fact, it is corruption in another form and we have to kill the both.”

He added further that there has not been a meaningful progress in Nigeria due to the practice of godfatherism, saying: “With godfathers always breathing on the necks of their godsons who hold public offices, we can neither kill corruption nor make progress in this country.”

Speaking further on the recess embarked upon recently, Dogara admitted that National Assembly did not break any law of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Annual recess or Summer recess, as it is known in other climes, is provided for in our parliamentary calendar,” he said.

He restated the assurance of the NASS not to renege in its promises to Nigerians. He posited that, “We operate a constitution and we would not be caught napping. More so, 30 billion naira has been slashed from National Assembly budget and this is the starting point of the 8th NASS. The last time I checked, the US Congress, UK, Canadian and other Parliaments were on recess. I believe the 8th Assembly would set record.”
