Students of English Department of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka have been urged to learn creativity in writing as well as imbibe the attitude of articulation and avoid plagiarism.

Speaking at an international workshop in creative writing organised by the Department of English Language and Literature of the institution, the former Dean Faculty of Theatre Arts, UNIZIK, Professor Alex Asigbo, expressed joy over the workshop.

He said it was apt as it avails the students and aspiring writers the opportunity to acquire requisite knowledge in modern writing skills and charged them to put into practice whatever they learnt from the event.

Asigbo said that arts generally try to reflect and portray humanity in all its complexities through written and spoken words, adding that such workshop provides an avenue to remove rough edges in writing advising the young writers to accept criticisms as it will help them to improve their skills.

In her remark, the Head of the department, Professor Stella Ekpe appealed to the students to take the lecture seriously for their own interest as it would help them immensely in future.

Delivering a lecture, the Guest Speaker on the occasion, Mrs. Kaine Agary, urged the students to always be conscious of grammatical rules and sentence structures while writing stressing the importance of reading other journals or books as it will help them in publishing materials that would be palatable and marketable.

On his part, a lecturer in the English Language and Literature Department, Dr. Chike Okoye, disclosed that Interactions like these spur aspiring writers to create their work, advising the students to keep writing as well as be focused and dedicated.

In their separate speeches, Messrs Ogbuagu Ukamaka, Chinyere Okereke and Nwankwo Chioma, affirmed that the event is an avenue to acquire skills of becoming influential writers and assured that they will practice what they have learnt.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to some distinguished personalities and cutting of an honourary cake to celebrate creative writing.
