Chief of Naval Staff charges men to protect waterways

Officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy in the Lagos area have been charged to do all it takes to effectively protect the country’s waterways as anything contrary to this is a betrayal of the confidence reposed on them.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, made the statement at his maiden meeting with members of the force as part of his familiarisation tour since assumption of duty.

Vice Admiral Ibas also said the Nigerian Navy was capable of delivering on its constitutional responsibilities.

The Nigerian Navy owes its origin to the Nigerian Marine. Formed in 1914 after the amalgamation of the then Northern and Southern protectorates of Nigeria; the responsibilities of the Marine included administration of the ports and harbours, dredging of channels, bouyage and lighting.

It also operated ferry services, touring launches, and other small craft that plied the various creeks and other inland waterways. (Channels TV)
