The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has bowed to pressure from the banking public and extended by four months the June 30 deadline it imposed for bank customers to register and obtain their Bank Verification Number (BVN).
“CBN extends BVN registration deadline to 31st Oct 2015. Avoid further delay and register now,” Ugo A. Okoroafor, Special Adviser on Communications to CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele tweeted late yesterday from his official handle, @Ugokraf.
About 10 million account holders were said to yet register as the previous deadline drew to a close yesterday. The apex bank had ruled out any extension of the deadline, thus subjecting millions of account holders to untold hardship as they thronged bank branches in a desperate bid to register for the BVN.
While the CBN has said that those who fail to get the BVN would be restricted from using online banking channels, some overzealous commercial bank personnel have unilaterally banned people without BVN from enjoying any form of banking service, including visitors from outside the country.
