Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio has pledged to provide land and issue a Certificate of Occupancy to Nigerian Scrabble Association to build a scrabble complex in the state.
Akpabio, who made the pledge Saturday when members of the Nigerian Scrabble Association, led by the state chairman, Engr. Ufot Ebong, paid him a courtesy visit at Governor’s Office, Uyo, said he was impressed with the success of scrabble game in the country.
The governor assured them of the continuous support of the state government and to work with them for a greater success of scrabble game in the country.
He then congratulated the President of the Nigerian Scrabble Federation, who is also the African President of Scrabble Association, Alhaji Suleiman Gora on his elevation and thanked him for the idea to build a scrabble headquarters in the state.
Speaking earlier, the state Chairman of Scrabble Association in the state, Mr. Ufot Ebong, thanked the state governor for his success in the recent elections, believing that he is bringing in a worthy successor to continue in the uncommon transformation strides of the state.
Ebong disclosed that their visit to the state was to conduct a national scrabble game in the state tagged, “a celebration of excellence,” which he said the reason for the theme of the game was to applaud Governor Akpabio for turning the once-pedestrian state to now a state of destination, which he said was the reason why the association called him The man with the Midas touch.
He further disclosed that the “Godswill Akpabio Scrabble Classics”, was named after the Akwa Ibom state governor because of his support towards the association and that the purpose of the classics is to train scrabble players for the next world scrabble game billed next year.
Ebong also stated that Mr. Nsikak Etim who is the current winner of the World Scrabble champion, hails from Akwa Ibom State and that the state was rated as the second best team player in the world in South Africa during the recent World Scrabble game, stressing that the association would continue to support Akpabio even in his future endeavours.
The President of the Nigerian Scrabble Federation, Alhaji Gora, commended Governor Akpabio for his support to the association, which he said has gone from strength to strength and pointed out that the state governor has made the state and country proud.
