A student’s body, West African Students Union Parliament (WASUP), has called on President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), to ensure he institutes good governance in the nation’s political system so as to show he appreciates the support given to him by Nigerians.

The body also said the support given to the President elect during the elections was overwhelming, hence, he must not disappoint Nigerians who voted for him against the incumbent President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Leader of the group, Mr. Samuel Solomon, gave the advice on Thursday when he led the union to present an award of excellence to the Chairman and members of Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Solomon, who is a Post-Graduate Student of Legon University, Ghana, gave the advice after presenting the award to the Chairman, Mr. Moses Ogbe in Asaba.

He said Nigerians believed that Buhari is a credible Nigerian, hence Nigerians went all out under the sun to vote for him as the next president of the country, noting that such confidence should not be misplaced.

According to Solomon, “The mandate was given to him by the masses, he should not let them down, it is as simple as that. A lot of people went out under the sun and rain to vote for him based on the fact that they felt he is a credible person.

“They have given him the mandate and they want to work with him, as such the mandate should not be taken for granted because the way in is also the way out. What we expect from him is to institute good governance.”

Ogbe, who spoke on behalf DSIEC, commended the students for finding the commission worthy of the award, noting that DSIEC was doing all it could to contribute to the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

He said the October 25, 2014 council election conducted in the state by DSIEC under his leadership was one of the most credible elections in the state, adding that the commissioning would continue to do its best in strengthening the electoral process in the state.

The DSIEC boss lauded the initiative of WASUP to institute a programme to check drug abuse, saying that illicit act has brought about bad reputation which must be reversed with whatever means legally possible.
