Governor Obiano
The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has resolved the face-off between Newspaper Vendors and Distributors Association and the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra State, a.k.a as OCHA Brigade.
The lingering face-off between the two organisations culminated into a strike on Monday by the vendors, which lasted for two days following government delay in responding to a letter of complaint written by the association lamenting the treatment meted out to their members.
The complaint includes destruction of tables used by the vendors in the sale of newspapers, extortion and high-handedness.
Speaking shortly after the reconciliation the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C Don Adinuba, explained that the resolution is at the instance of the governor who recently returned from a working visit abroad.
According to him, the governor had insisted the matter be resolved within two days so as to sustain the peace and harmony in the state using dialogue.
He observed that the crisis was a product of communication gap between the Newspaper vendors/distributors and the OCHA Brigade, adding that the payment of what he described as a token by the vendors was inherited by the new management of the tax force.
In his speech, the Director of the tax force, Engr Douglas Okafor, commended the governor for the quick resolution of the matter.
He noted that his intervention has gone a long way in making both bodies understand themselves better.
On his part, the Chairman of the Association, Mr Emeka Nweze, commended the state government over the resolution.
Also, the representative of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, Mr Okechukwu Obeta, hailed the Commissioner for the fatherly role he played to ensure the matter was resolved amicably.
