An abandoned three-day-old baby boy dumped by an unknown person at an erosion site behind Girls Secondary School Amaenyi, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State was, on Monday, night discovered by teenagers on a snail hunt.

News Expresslearnt that the baby reportedly wrapped inside a black sack was discovered alive by four teenagers.

Handing over the rescued child to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South local Government Area, Mr. Leo Nwuba, said the council decided to hand the baby over to the state so as to ensure he gets good upbringing. He described the child as a miracle baby having survived death.

While commending the teenagers who were instrumental to his discovery and rescue, Nwuba expressed hope that the baby would become a shining light for the state through the love of the wife of the State Governor, Chief Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano.

Narrating their encounter to journalists, one of the rescuers, Obinna Onyebuchi, said they had mistaken the baby for a dog when they first saw the black sack.

He said: “When we got closer and looked at it, we saw that it was a newborn baby. We immediately ran home in fear to alert our sister who instructed us to bring the baby home.”

Onyebuchi’s elder sister, Miss Onyekachi Eze, while confirming that the baby was brought home to her said the baby had blood on him when she unwrapped it.

“I quickly cleaned him up and took him to a police station before taking him to a hospital for medical examination,” she said.

The four teenagers witnessed the handover ceremony which took place at the council headquarters, Amawbia.
