The burnt mortuary
The mortuary section of General Hospital, Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been gutted by fire.
It was gathered that the fire incident which happened in the evening of Saturday, December 29, 2018, affected about fifty corpses placed in the morgue.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said that Police Patrol Team led by DPO Nimo Division, CSP EGU Benjamin, rushed to the scene as soon as they got the information and cordoned off the Area to prevent looters from taking advantage of the situation to loot.
He said on arrival, the police contacted Fire Service Department who on arrival to the scene put off the fire with the help of local volunteers, but unfortunately, “the fire had caused extensive damage in the building as almost all the corpses at the mortuary were burnt beyond recognition.”
The statement reads in part: “Today 29/12/2018 at about 5:41pm there was a fire outbreak at the mortuary section of General Hospital Enugwu -Ukwu in Njikoka local Government Area of Anambra State.
“The fire has caused extensive damage in the building as almost all the corpses at the mortuary were burnt beyond recognition.”
He said that the cause of the fire is yet unknown, adding that the case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.
