For journalist-turned-entrepreneur Akin Adeoya, it was a sweet surprise on Friday night when he turned up on invitation for what was supposed to be a Marketing Colloquium where he would present a short paper – only to find out that it was a surprise 50th birthday party by over a hundred people who have worked in his companies – past and present.

Venue was one of Mr. Adeoya’s hotels, Eagles Park 1960, located in Ikeja, Lagos.

The ebullient Mr. Adeoya, accompanied by his wife Florence, was ushered in at about 6:45 p.m., upon which the crowd of staff, ex-staff, and invited friends burst into a melodious “Happy birthday to you . . .”

Thereafter, the party began, and for the next over two hours, it was fun unlimited.

The programme included brief introductions, eulogies, poetry reading, cutting of cake, and dancing, and presentation of gift to the celebrant. There was also plenty to eat and drink.

In his brief speech, Akin (as he is fondly called) thanked his staff and former staff for the pleasant surprise. “This is a good idea,” he said. “I can’t thank you guys enough.”

Akin, who is credited with pioneering critical brand reporting in Nigeria, was formerly one of the editors of THISDAY. He later left journalism for public relations and publishing before finally settling for the hospitality business.

The celebrant, whose actual birthday was on Wednesday, December 19, presently boasts hotels in various parts of Lagos, with the innovative food firm Buka24/7 being the latest product of his fertile mind.
