Disgraced Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) lecturer, Professor Richard Akindele, was today, Monday, December 17, 2018, sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to the sex-for-marks allegation leveled against him.

Akindele was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Osogbo, capital of Osun State, by Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) for attempting to have sex with one of his students, Miss Monica Osagie, in exchange for marks.

News Express reports that after being disengaged from the services of the university, the disgraced academic was dragged to court by ICPC and remanded in prison custody.

At the resumed hearing today, the prosecutor, Shogunle Adenekan, told the court that all parties in the matter had reach a plea bargain for a suspended sentence for the accused person.

However, Justice Maurine Onyetenu while ruling on the case said it was necessary to punish the accused to serve as a deterrent to other lecturers. The judge subsequently sentenced Akindele to six years imprisonment.
