Tension in Ghana over alleged moves to rig presidential election

Tension has risen sharply in Ghana over allegation of moves to rig yesterday’s presidential election in the West African country.

Hundreds of supporters of the opposition National Patriotic Party (NPP) have besieged a building at Dzorwlu in Ayawaso-West Wuogon of Accra where it is claimed that election results are being doctored in favour of the ruling National Democratic Coalition (NDC). The building has been cordoned off by security operatives.

A report by Ghana News Agency says that former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, head of the Election Monitoring Team sent to Ghana by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has visited the building to see things for himself. On arriving there, Obasanjo was told that the allegation is false and that the building provides IT back-up facilities for the Electoral Commission.

NPP supporters however refused to buy the explanation and security men had to be deployed to the building to maintain peace. NPP supporters are keeping vigil at the building

The NDC has meanwhile berated NPP, accusing it of staging a drama because it has a premonition of defeat.

The result of the election in which President John Dramani Mahama and NPP’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are the main candidates, is expected to be released in the next 24 hours.
