Angry mob beat car snatcher to death at burial ceremony in Anambra
An unknown young man on Thursday met his death in the hands of irate mob who beat him to a pulp after he was caught making away with a car he stole in Ukpor, Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State.
The Honda CRV car which belonged to one Mr. Ifeanyi Obiaku was parked close to the location of a burial ceremony when it was stolen with a suspected master key.
News Expresslearnt that the owner of the car who was attending the burial ceremony saw his car being driven away by an unknown male and immediately raised alarm that attracted an irate mob that intercepted the suspect’s movement and beat him to a pulp.
They subsequently dumped the suspect in a corner where he laid until police officers from Ukpor division who had rushed to the scene on learning of the incident picked him.
But, on noticing the comatose state of the suspect, the police officers immediately took him to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital Nnewi for medical attention, he was unfortunately confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mohammed Haruna Mohammed said an irate mob beat the suspect to a state of coma raised, leading to his death.
His words: “At about 18:20HRS, one Ifeanyi Obiaku, male of Nnewi town reported at Ukporpolice division that he went for a burial ceremony at Umudike village Ukpor and packed his Honda CRV jeep, milk in colour with reg. no KJA-224-BJ, all of a sudden, he sighted an unknown person reasonably suspected to be a thief moving out of the venue with his car at about 17:15hrs of same date.
“Meanwhile, police patrol team attached to Ukpor division visited the scene and rushed the suspect to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewifor medical attention but he was confirmed on arrival by a medical doctor and the corpse deposited in the mortuary.”
While saying that the identity of the suspect is yet to be ascertained, the PPRO how said a fabricated master key were recovered as exhibits adding that the case under investigation.
He, however, condemned the action of the irate mob saying that it was wrong for them to have taken the laws into their hands.
He added: “The command is determined to fish out perpetrators of the action in order to bring them to justice.”
