Police has arrested embattled lawmaker representing Delta North, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who invaded the Senate plenary today with some other hoodlums to cart away with the mace.
It was gathered that the senator was arrested outside the National Assembly Complex where he does not have immunity at about 2pm. The mace has meanwhile been recovered.
As earlier reported by News Express, Omo-Agege reportedly managed to make his way into the chambers despite his suspension at about 11:15 a.m.
Senators were left in shock as they sighted him and his company of thugs getting into the chamber, successfully beating security operatives in the hallowed chambers.
Following the shocking episode, the presiding officer, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, declared that “the Senate has been invaded” and plenary was immediately aborted before it even took off.
The Senate thereafter mandated the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Kpotum Idris and Acting Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mallam Lawan Daura, to retrieve the mace stolen by the hoodlums within 24 hours.
The upper chamber had, after recovering from shock, resumed plenary session following an executive (closed door) session where they discussed the issue.
News Express reports that Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was suspended last Thursday for 90 legislative days for his comments on the electoral act amendment bill which he said was targeted at the President Muhammadu Buhari.
