The arrested officer
The FCT Police Command has arrested an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly firing shots into the air during a confrontation with traders at Kubwa Market, Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 25, 2026, at about 1:50 p.m., following a distress call received by the police over sporadic gunshots at the market.
Police operatives responded to the report and arrested the suspect, identified as Onoja Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the NSCDC.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly went to the market with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.
During a confrontation with the traders, he allegedly fired several shots into the air, prompting the intervention of security operatives.
The police said a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspect.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has urged officers of sister security agencies operating in the territory to coordinate with local police divisions before embarking on operations.
He stressed the importance of inter-agency cooperation and proper coordination to prevent incidents capable of endangering residents and disrupting public peace. (Zagazola, excluding headline)
