The National Assembly was practically thrown into confusion earlier today following the intrusion of some men who invaded the Senate to cart away the mace, the symbol of authority.
The hoodlums are believed to be sympathisers of the suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who represents Delta North and who was sighted alongside the fierce-looking men.
Following the shocking episode, the presiding officer, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, declared that “the Senate has been invaded” and plenary was immediately aborted before it even took off.
News Express recalls that last Thursday, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was suspended for 90 legislative days for his comments on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill which he said was targeted at the President Muhammadu Buhari.
Reacting to the invasion, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said it was an act of treason and an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force.
According to Sabi, “Today, some armed hoodlums led by suspended Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper Legislative Chamber, the mace.
“This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such. All Security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilise their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act.”
Sabi added: “This action is also an affront on the legislature, and the leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action.”
