Worried by “myriads of complaints from serving and retired police officers, as well as from the public” Retired IGs Forum (RIF) invited Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Kpotum Idris for a crucial meeting but he snubbed the forum.

This was disclosed by CRIME TRACKER, which said the meeting was to have taken place last December. CRIME TRACKER is a special publication that appears every Saturday in THE INDEPENDENT, Lagos.

Today’s edition quoted a source close to RIF as disclosing: “The forum was disturbed by many reports of corruption, nepotism and neglect of retired senior officers (by Idris.) He was invited so as to find out if the allegations are correct and to caution him if need be. The House of Assembly once summoned him over alleged corruption, but he shunned the House. Apart from that, the association wanted to discuss insecurity in the country with him, because as a senior police officer, whether serving or retired, if the public is constantly openly complaining against the police, one should feel concerned, because it is the institution we served with sincerity of purpose.”

“We are all aware of the insecurity in the country it’s not that somebody is complaining. If the police is effectively combating the insurgency, the military would not be involved,” the source was further quoted as saying.

He recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari said in Makurdi that he was surprised that he directed the IG to relocate to Benue but he failed to do so. “What did the President do to him for violating his directive? We learnt he gave him a query, but Moshood, the PRO said the IG was not given any query. So let us watch. He will retire next year and join the league of retired IGs,” the source lamented.

CRIME TRACKER said it also learnt that one other reason for inviting Idris was complaints from several retired senior police officers, who alleged that Idris hardly give them audience each time they sought audience with him at his 7th floor office at Louis Edet House, Garki, Abuja.

It reported that very senior police officers are grumbling that the IG is “running the police as his personal business,” quoting one of them as lamenting: “He hardly takes advice.”
