The town of Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State was weekend thrown into mourning as a 66 years old mother of two graduates, whose name was simply given as Uzoaku committed suicide.
Information has it that the woman had earlier expressed frustration over the joblessness of her two children who graduated many years ago.
The deceased who residents of the area described as an industrious woman hanged herself with a rope which she tied to the burglary proof of the window in her room.
News Express learnt that the deceased was cooking in her kitchen around 4pm, when she suddenly abandoned the half done food and went to the bedroom where she ended her life.
The younger brother to the deceased, Fredrick Nwenu, who spoke with some journalists condemned her sister's action saying she had no reason to take her life.
His words: “The news came to me as a shock. I accommodated my sister for sometime before now. My sister had no reason to do this, having trained her two children to university level.
“She has two children who are university graduates. The daughter is happily married with kids. So she has no reason whatsoever to commit suicide.”
Describing the incident as regrettable, a neighbour, Isaac Umeh, queried why a grandmother would take such drastic decision adding that the woman was alone at home when the incident took place.
“Nobody was around except her. The food she was cooking was still on fire when she suddenly abandoned it and rushed into the room where she used a rope to hang herself on a window protector.
“The whole thing is still a shock to us because nobody believed a woman of her age with grand children can take her life that way,” Umeh stated.
When our correspondent visited the residence of the late Uzoaku, sympathisers were seen trooping in large numbers to condole with the family.
The story could not however be confirmed by the police as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nkeiruka Nwode, were unanswered.
