APC writes off National Conference

Leading opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has written off the forthcoming National Conference, saying that nothing good would come out of it.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was dismissive when Tribune asked him to comment on the modalities for the conference released Thursday by the Nigerian Government. He “reiterated the party’s opposition to the exercise, insisting that nothing would come out of it at the end of the day,” newspaper reported, adding:

“When prodded on the possibility of the conference turning out positive, he maintained that whatever outcome would be of no concern to the party.

“He refused to comment on the details contained in the modalities, saying the decision not to participate was final.”

News Express reports that 10 representatives of political parties with representatives in the National Assembly would be among delegates to the conference scheduled to hold from March to May.

Releasing the conference modalities at a press conference in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, had said that only five political parties that have representation at the National Assembly would fill the 10 slots reserved for political parties. The parties are APC, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP) and Accord Party (AP). It is not yet known what would happen to APC’s slots.
