Anambra Election Petition Tribunal begins sitting Tuesday (Feb. 4)

The Anambra State Governorship Election Tribunal presided over by Justice J.K. Kaigama will be sitting from next Tuesday, February 4, in the state capital, Awka, in connection with the legal challenge against the election of Chief Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

This was disclosed by Obiano’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), while opposing the application brought before a Federal High Court in Abuja by two Anambra State indigenes challenging the election of Obiano on the grounds of alleged multiple registration.

Ikpeazu while frowning at the suit by Ugochukwu Ikegwuonu and Kenneth Moneke, pointed out that the issues raised by them are already before the Anambra Elections Petitions Tribunal which will be sitting from next Tuesday. Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned the suit to February 27 for hearing.

It would be recalled that News Express on December 3 broke the story that Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressive Congress (APC) had filed a suit at the tribunal challenging Obiano’s victory in the election held on November 16, 17 and 30 last year. The Senator was beaten to the third position during the election, managing to score only 95,953 votes as against 180,178 votes by Obiano and 97,700 votes by second-placed Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who has also lodged a suit at the tribunal.
