Enugu State House of Assembly
Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday screened and confirmed three commissioner nominees sent to them by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The names of the commissioner designates were presented before the Assembly last Tuesday.
The commissioners designate confirmed are Dr. Donatus Ani, Mr. Joseph Udeji and Mr. Robert Anikwe Ogbuagu.
Their confirmation followed volleys of questions posed on Messers Udeji and Ogbuagu because Dr. Ani had earlier been asked to take a bow because he has been a statesman who had served the state as an honourable member of the State House of Assembly as well as other positions in the state.
Member representing Enugu South Constituency at the Assembly, Hon. Obinna Okenwa, moved the motion that there was no need to screen a man who is, according to him, ‘over qualified’, and thus his colleagues supported that he should take a bow.
After fielding questions from the assembly members who threw a barrage of questions, Udeji and Ogbuagu were equally asked to take a bow.
The confirmation of Mr. Udeji however would have suffered as a result of objection raised by the member representing Udi North, Hon. Johnbull Nwagu, who questioned the discrepancies in the dates in the date of birth of Mr. Udeji as well as the date when he did his youth service.
Nwagu equally pointed out that he once had a dealing with Udeji but could not get satisfaction as a banker and doubted if he would make a good commissioner if confirmed.
Udeji’s confirmation was however facilitated with the intervention of the Speaker, Hon. Edward Ubosi, who said that he had discussed with Udeji on the discrepancies on the dates on his date of birth and his NYSC discharge certificate. The commissioner nominee was however asked to clarify the anomaly in due course as the house reserved the right to recall him should he fail to do the needful.
In another development, the House passed into law the amended Education Law Cap 37 of Enugu State 2004 and to Provide for Other Matters Therewith, House Bill No. 6, 2017.
The amended bill was meant to effect changes of some obsolete laws guiding basic education in Enugu State.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Edward Ubosi, thanked the joint House Committee members on Education and other committees that participated in facilitating the passage of the bill into law.
“I want to thank the Chairman of the House Committee on Education and members for a job well done. I also thank my colleagues for their contributions on the debate on the bill,” Ubosi said.
