Bill sponsor, Senator Stella Oduah
The Nigerian Senate has tracked a Bill for an Act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act CAP N84 LFN 2004 which, when passed into law, will equip Corp members with entrepreneurial skills to enable them build themselves as employers of Labour.
The #NyscBill (SB. 147) sponsored by Senator Stella Oduah went for first reading on 24th November 2015 and second reading on 17th May 2017, wason Mondayreferred to the constitutional review committee for further legislative action.
In her motion, she argued that according to research, Nigerian youths over the years, have resorted to acquiring certificates because they no longer get jobs with first degree certificates.
Speaking on the objective of the NYSC Bill, she said it will reduce unemployment among our teeming graduates after their service year because they will become self-employed and, by implication, even be employers of Labour.
Oduah in her appeal to colleagues in the Senate said: “We haveto transform the NYSC into an NYSC of national service and development, which was the original idea behind the scheme,” adding: “Our teeming youths need to be developed and placed in the right direction and hence, make them useful tools.”
She lamented the condition of frustrated Nigerian youths who are desperate yet confused about what to do after NYSC because they failed to acquire vocational skills.
