Brutalised journalist Ibrahima Yakubu
The Kaduna State Police Command has apologised to Ibrahima Yakubu, a journalist brutalised by the police during the recent Shiite clash with a Kaduna community.
Mr. Yakubu, who was arrested while covering a procession by Shiites in Kaduna last Friday, said he was beaten by the police before being detained.
Hereports for the Hausa Service of the German Deutsche Welle (DW) radio.
He was arrested as he was covering a scene where locals attacked the Shiites and tried to force them to disperse.
At least two people were injured in the attack, witnesses said. Authorities said 10 people were arrested.
Yakubu was released on bail to his colleagues about six hours after his arrest by the Police. It is not clear whether he was one of the 10 people arrested.
The Commissioner ofPolice, Agyole Abeh, made a verbal apology on behalf of the Command to Yakubu in his office.
The CP also promised to look into his budget with a view to replacing the damaged equipment of the journalist.
Yakubu, who was accompanied to the CP’s office by his colleagues, was also confirmed not to be a member of the Shiite as alleged, but a journalist carrying out his constitutional responsibility.
