Founder of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), Mrs Betty Akeredolu, has disclosed that lack of adequate information was responsible for the increase in death of breast cancer victims among Nigeria women.

She disclosed this yesterday at a press conference at the Ondo State Government House, Akure. According to her, having breast cancer is not a death sentence as erroneously believed by a lot of Nigeria women.

She said lack of awareness about early detection and control had also been a major constrain in the reduction of breast cancer in the country.

Mrs Akeredolu said that a lot of women in the country shy away from the truth about breast cancer and don’t want to know about it or talk about, which had resulted in the death of many women in the country.

She also disclosed that the disease progresses on stages and not usually painful but a time bomb if not detected at the early stage.

The wife of the governor urged media practitioners to help in educating members of the public, especially women, that having a breast cancer is not the end of their lives.

“No woman will be show a way to survive a die seas that will not like it so let the awareness be much so that the women be ready to go for treatment,” she said.

She warned that after the early detection of the breast cancer, the affected person should consult a specialised doctor rather than any doctor who knows nothing about cancer.

She called on state governors in the country to as a matter of urgency establish a breast cancer treatment centre in their various states, adding that the welfare and health status of the

citizens was the responsibility of the government.

Mrs Akeredolu also enjoined members of the public to help in creating awareness about breast cancer that has sent a lot of people, both the rich and the poor, to their early graves
