The Supreme Court, on Friday morning, affirmed the victory of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu as governor of Abia State.
Delivering judgment in an appeal brought before it by Dr Uche Sampson Ogah, the five-man Supreme Court panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, the learned jurists said the case lacked merit and dismissed it accordingly.
The panel, in its ruling, said: “The long and short of it is that this was no case. The Governor, as a government official within the period his tax was in dispute cannot be held responsible if there is any discrepancy in the tax clearance certificate issued to him by the tax authorities. That his tax was being deducted at source as a government official should not have been in dispute. All other matters rest on this and they are all equally dismissed.”
Immediately he received news of his victory, Ikpeazu reportedly rushed into the Unity Chapel in Government House where a church service to thank God for the favourable Supreme Court ruling.
