NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi at the party's rally in Calabar
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has declared his intention to wage an uncompromising war on kidnapping, insecurity and corruption, pledging to unite the country and prioritise citizens’ welfare if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Obi made the commitments on Wednesday during a town hall meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, where he outlined the priorities of his proposed administration and promised a different approach to governance.
The former Anambra State governor identified national unity as the foundation for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and other national problems, lamenting that divisions within the country had weakened its ability to confront the threats facing it.
“Our commitment is to unite Nigeria. Nigeria today is not united. If we unite Nigeria today, we will have the strength to fight insecurity,” he said.
On the worsening security situation, Obi vowed that his administration would not tolerate kidnapping, particularly the abduction of schoolchildren, promising to deploy security agencies to pursue criminals into their hideouts and secure the release of their victims.
He said security operatives would not be deterred by the remote locations where kidnappers operate, insisting that those responsible for abducting schoolchildren would be pursued wherever they sought refuge.
“Anybody who kidnaps schoolchildren and goes into the bush, we will be in that bush with him, wherever it is. We are not scared of him,” he added. (The Sun)
