The suspects
By HAMISU HUSSAINI
The Police Command in Katsina State has arrested 14 suspects over an attack on an All Progressives Congress (APC) convoy along the Yashi–Funtua road in Malumfashi Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Katsina.
Sadiq-Aliyu said the incident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Oct. 28, while the convoy was travelling through Malumfashi to Funtua for a campaign flag-off.
He explained that the command had deployed security personnel along major routes, including the Yashi–Funtua road, ahead of the movement to ensure the safety of travellers and other road users.
He however said suspected political thugs armed with knives and stones attacked the convoy and other vehicles, smashing the windscreens of several of them.
“The attack also left a female passenger travelling in a commercial vehicle injured,” according to the police spokesperson.
Sadiq-Aliyu said the police personnel deployed along the route swiftly intervened, restored order and arrested 14 suspects in connection with the incident.
He said efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest other suspects who fled the scene.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Ali Umar-Fage, has condemned the attack warning that the command would not tolerate political thuggery or violence capable of disrupting public peace.
Umar-Fage urged political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully, stressing that the police would take appropriate action against anyone involved in activities that threatened public safety. (NAN)
