A Kano-based tailor who performed a 120-hour sewing marathon, Abdulkadir Hassan-Basri, has distributed uniforms to 200 less privileged primary school pupils in Kano.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hassan-Basri performed a sewing marathon at the Sports Complex of the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, in his attempt to break the Guinness World Record.
The sewing marathon was conducted between Oct. 7, and 12, where he produced the 200 uniforms distributed on Thursday.
NAN also reports that Hassan-Basri is still awaiting response from the Guinness World Record on his performance.
Distributing the items to the pupils at Dandago Special Primary School and Gwale Special Primary School in Kano city, Hassan-Basri, said the sewing marathon was tagged: “Sew For The Nation”.
He revealed that the exercise combined record-breaking with educational support for vulnerable children.
According to him, the gesture is part of his commitment to supporting less-privileged children and demonstrate how vocational skills, community participation, and collective efforts can create opportunities and improve lives.
“Through this initiative, we seek to highlight the importance of education, skills development, and community support in promoting the welfare of vulnerable children.
“To be honest, beyond record-breaking, the project was designed as a national movement, leveraging creativity, resilience, and vocational skills to empower Nigerian youth, support education, and uplift communities.
“I am really happy and inspired, and we are going to do more, to be honest with you, this is just the beginning,” he assured.
He said that he was even planning for a bigger and stronger initiative soon.
In his remarks, the Director Schools, Kano State Ministry of Education, Sagir Umar-Danbari, commended the tailor for the gesture, and wished him success in his endeavors.
He said that it would go a long way in complementing government efforts toward improving the welfare of students, especially the less privileged ones.
In their separate responses, the headmasters of Dandago, and Gwale Special Primary Schools, Malam Ibrahim Abdullahi and Sanusi Auwalu, respectively, thanked Hassan-Basri for choosing their schools among the beneficiaries.
They assured to ensure justice in the distribution of the items for the benefit of the pupils to achieve the set objective.
Suleiman Yunusa, a 10-year-old pupil at Gwale primary school, who spoke on behalf of the friends, thanked the tailor and prayed for his success. (NAN)
