A Chinese court sentenced Wang Huimin, former official of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), to death with a two-year reprieve for bribery on Tuesday.
The Intermediate People's Court of Chengdu, in southwest China's Sichuan Province, found that Wang abused his positions at the CSRC and in the administration of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region between 1998 and 2025 to accept cash and property worth 436 million yuan ($65.4 million), according to state-run Xinhua news agency.
Wang was also deprived of his political rights for life, and the court ordered the confiscation of his personal assets.
The court said he confessed, disclosed offenses previously unknown to investigators and expressed remorse. Some offenses remained at the attempted rather than completed, while he returned part of the assets obtained through bribery.
These factors were cited as grounds for granting the two-year reprieve.
Under Chinese law, his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment if he commits no further crimes during that period.
Wang was head of a discipline inspection and supervision team sent by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Commission of Supervision, the country's top anti-graft agency, to the CSRC. (AA)
