The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Women Commission has called for equal opportunities and greater leadership representation for women in workplace decision-making and national development.
Mrs Ijeoma Kalu, National Women Coordinator of SSANU, made the call at the 2026 SSANU National Women Conference on Wednesday in Abuja.
The conference was themed: “Healthy Women, Strong Union: Positioning SSANU Women for Leadership and National Relevance.”
Kalu said the conference provided an opportunity to examine challenges confronting women in workplaces and society, while exploring practical strategies to advance their welfare and professional development.
“The theme of this conference provides us with an important opportunity to examine the challenges confronting women in the workplace and society.
“It also allows us to explore practical ways to strengthen our participation in leadership, decision-making and national development.
“We must continue to advocate for an environment where women are respected, empowered, and given equal opportunities to contribute meaningfully to institutional growth,” she said.
She urged SSANU women to strengthen their solidarity, build professional networks, encourage mentorship and support younger women seeking career advancement.
“As SSANU women, we must remain united, because our strength lies in our collective voice, solidarity and willingness to support one another,” Kalu said.
She noted that women contributed significantly to university administration, institutional development and the effective functioning of Nigeria’s university system.
According to her, women’s responsibilities extend beyond their professional duties, describing them as mothers, mentors, leaders and nation-builders whose contributions deserve greater recognition.
Kalu commended the national leadership of SSANU for supporting women and recognising their contributions to the association, while applauding zonal and branch women coordinators for their dedication.
She urged participants to translate lessons from the conference into practical actions that would improve women’s welfare, promote professional growth, and strengthen female representation in leadership.
“When women are empowered, families are strengthened, workplaces are transformed, communities progress and nations develop.
“I hope this conference produces meaningful outcomes, stronger professional relationships, and a renewed commitment to advancing women’s interests within SSANU and beyond,” she added. (NAN)
