TikToker Amani Ishaq
The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested popular TikTok personality Amani Ishaq and two other women over videos allegedly considered contrary to the state’s religious and moral standards.
The board’s Deputy Commander, Dr Mujahid Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrests in a statement, identifying the other suspects as Hauwa Khamis and Sa’adatu Muhammad.
According to the statement, the three women appeared before Magistrate Court No. 5 on Court Road, Kano, as investigations into the videos continued.
The Hisbah Board specifically accused Ishaq of posting dance videos on TikTok containing content it considered inconsistent with Islamic teachings and standards of proper upbringing.
The board said it was examining the videos to determine the appropriate next course of action.
However, details of the specific charges against the women, their bail conditions and the date of the next court hearing were not disclosed.
The arrests have renewed attention on the regulation of social media content in Kano State, where the Hisbah Board is responsible for enforcing laws and regulations relating to public morality and religious conduct.
The board has, on several occasions, come into contact with social media users and content creators over online activities it considers inconsistent with the state’s religious and moral standards.
The development also highlights the ongoing debate over the limits of public morality enforcement and freedom of expression, particularly as platforms such as TikTok increasingly serve as spaces for entertainment, creativity and personal expression.
While authorities have the responsibility to enforce applicable laws, the case raises questions about how such regulations should be applied to social media content and the rights of individuals to express themselves within the law.
The allegations against Ishaq, Khamis and Muhammad remain unproven. Their appearance in court does not establish guilt, and further details of the proceedings are expected to clarify the legal status of the case. (Sunday Tribune)
